ILA Rallies for Good Port Jobs
Over 200 ILA members and officers rallied in front of Global Terminal for good union jobs on January 6th. Local 1588, Local 1804-1, Local 1, the ILA Atlantic Coast District, and ILA International called the rally for good jobs to shine a public light on Global Container Terminals plans to automate away good paying union jobs.
Members and officers from different locals came from as far away as Philadelphia as well as from Manhattan, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Newark and Elizabeth, to support members who work at Global Terminal.
The Port Authority is throwing millions of dollars of public money behind the expanded terminal for automated cranes, the construction of a rail terminal, the reconstruction of NJTP exit 14A and wind mills for power generation. Global and the Port Authority have put up the money claiming the project will generate middle class jobs.
But 1588 has done extensive research on the automation of marine terminals around the world. The reality is that unless the union fights to expand jurisdiction, create paid training and education programs, limit supervisors working, get guaranteed hours and salaries there will be a drastic reduction in good union jobs along the waterfront.
The rally took place five days before the union sat down with management to hear a presentation on the plans to automate. The meeting comes almost a year and a half after the union requested information on the plans to automate.
