China banned hardwood and softwood log exports from Virginia and South Carolina in April 2011, citing pest interceptions on logs exported from the U.S.China will begin to lift its ban on imports of Virginia’s hardwood and softwood logs under a six-month pilot project, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell said Wednesday.
Although technical details are being finalized, Virginia logs will be allowed to re-enter China beginning on June 1 in certain designated ports and with enhanced pest treatment and testing protocols under the terms of the pilot project.

The Port of Long Beach’s fiscal plan for 2013 includes more than $720 million in capital spending and the hiring of 25 more employees to support major projects, including the replacement of the Gerald Desmond Bridge and the development of Middle Harbor.
The Board of Harbor Commissioners on Monday endorsed a $942 million Harbor Department budget for fiscal year 2013, a 12 percent jump from last year’s budget, or about $102 million.

The Port of Oakland announced it is undertaking actions to cope with stalled contract negotiations with Service Employees International Union Local 1021.
The agreement between the union and the Oakland port expired June 30, 2011. The union represents 250 janitorial, maintenance and security workers.
The port and SEIU had reached and signed a tentative agreement for a new contract in late March, but SEIU members rejected the tentative agreement when they voted in April.
