ILA International President Harold DaggettInternational Longshoremen’s Association President Harold Daggett said United States Maritime Alliance has been unwilling to agree to ILA contract demands for job guarantees in exchange for increased use of labor-saving technology.
In a letter to ILA locals, Daggett advised union officers to “inform their memberships that they should prepare themselves for any action we may have to take if USMX’s position does not change.”

Industry-wide vessel schedule reliability improved to 72.3 percent in the first quarter of 2012, but carriers’ service standards for some commercial processes remain as low 40 percent, according to a quarterly report on the shipping sector.
The report named the most reliable carriers for the period were Maersk Line of Denmark and its Belgium-headquartered sister company Safmarine, followed by Hanjin Shipping of South Korea.
Drewry said that for the first time, it has incorporated new key performance indicators using data from e-commerce platform CargoSmart that measure commercial and operational performance at the box level.

Longshore union local ILWU 502 has raised $22,000 for the Children’s Hospital. Last year they raised $20,502, and with still a few weeks left they have easily beaten their old record. The telethon will be broadcast on Global TV June 2 and 3. 'This is a very good cause and we are going to raise as much as we possibly can,' they stated. The telethon raises millions every year for the Children’s Hospital.
