The Associated Press reported today on the end of the Office Clerical Unit’s strike at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach:
“I’m really pleased to tell all of you that my 10,000 longshore workers in the ports of LA and Long Beach are going to start moving cargo on these ships,” said Ray Familathe, vice president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union. “We’re going to get cargo moved throughout the supply chain and the country and get everybody those that they’re looking for in those stores.”
Negotiators reached a tentative agreement to end the strike late Tuesday, less than two hours after federal mediators arrived from Washington, D.C. No details about the terms of the deal were released, though a statement from the workers’ union said it had won new protections preventing jobs from being outsourced.
Days of negotiations that included all-night bargaining sessions suddenly went from a stalemate to big leaps of progress by Tuesday. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said the sides were already prepared to take a vote when the mediators arrived.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Four hundred and fifty office clerical workers ended their one-week strike to secure good jobs for working families in the harbor community by winning new protections that will help prevent jobs from being outsourced to Texas, Taiwan and beyond.
Tentative agreement on a new contract was reached between members of ILWU Local 63’s Office Clerical Unit (OCU) and 14 employers at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
“This victory was accomplished because of support from the entire ILWU family of 10,000 members in the harbor community,” said ILWU International President Robert McEllrath who praised the unity and solidarity of members, their families and thousands of community supporters.
ILWU International Vice President Ray Familathe was assigned to help coordinate support for the clerical workers strike and assist them in the final negotiations. “Our campaign was always focused on securing good jobs and stopping the outsourcing that threatened working families in our harbor communities.”

Negotiators reached a tentative deal late Tuesday to end the strike that has hobbled the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach for more than a week.
The deal would not become final unless it is authorized in a vote of the 800-member International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 63 Office Clerical Unit.
Both union and harbor employers spent most of Tuesday huddled inside a community center near the port. Two federal mediators joined Villaraigosa there at about 8:30 p.m. as negotiators for the union were voting behind closed doors.
Word of the deal came shortly after federal mediators arrived to try to break the impasse between port employers and the union.
