For those who want to weigh in on the Gateway Pacific Terminal project, the official comment period for a key point in the process start[ed] Monday, Sept. 24.
Three governmental agencies – Whatcom County, the Washington Department of Ecology and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – will jointly produce the EIS. To do that, the agencies are accepting public comment starting Monday and going through Jan. 21, 2013.
The public can view and post comments about the proposed project at eisgatewaypacificwa.gov. People also can mail comments to GPT/Custer Spur EIS, 1100 112th Ave. NE, Suite 400, Bellevue WA 98004.
The lead agencies will be hosting seven public meetings across the state about the project. Locally meetings will be held:

Saturday, Oct. 27, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Squalicum High School in Bellingham
Thursday, Nov. 29, 3 to 7 p.m. at the Ferndale Events Center

Other meetings will in Friday Harbor, Mount Vernon, Seattle, Spokane and Vancouver.

A 56-year-old man has been crushed to death in the Port of Newcastle, in New South Wales, after a massive load of aluminium shifted and fell as he loaded it onto a ship.
Police say Greg Fitzgibbon was working on board a Chinese-registered bulk carrier docked at Carrington, in Newcastle Harbour Sunday at about 9:30pm.
A crane was loading cargo of aluminium onto the ship when a 20-tonne pallet unexpectedly shifted and the Newcastle Stevedores wharfie was crushed.
Chaplain to the Port of Newcastle, Reverend Gary Dodd, says “It’s absolutely devastating and it just highlights the incredibly dangerous industry that these people work in.”
