”One star with five hands on black background guide us / And the red is the blood of those who have passed.” — From the Unión Portuaria de Chile anthem
This week, members of the Chilean Port Workers’ Union (UPC by its Spanish acronym) stood up for good jobs and family benefits at a rally that temporarily blocked a highway. They then posted a video set to the music of the union’s anthem. We’ve posted the lyrics and a translation below the video; click on the image below to watch and listen.

Anthem lyrics:

Spanish: Letra Himno Unión Portuaria
English: Port Union Anthem Lyrics

Excerpts from an analysis by the Journal of Commerce:
The article compares the effectiveness of cost-cutting strategies of ocean carriers with those of surface transportation companies such as rail and trucking.Just when you thought the news couldn’t get worse for global container carriers that lost an estimated $650 million collectively in the first half of the year, it did.
Beyond the deepening financial losses — the exception being Maersk Line’s exceptional $554 million third quarter profit driven by deep cost-cutting — the news included the ouster of two industry leaders and the retirement of a third.
All of this underscores the weakness that has plagued global shipping markets for three of the last four years, and stands in stark contrast to the financial fortunes among North American surface operators.

While the U.S.-led TPP aims for the abolition of all tariffs, Japan wants to retain tariffs it imposes on five farm product categories including rice. The United States and other TPP members are putting strong pressure on Japan to further open up its agricultural market.Japan’s minister in charge of the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade negotiations said Sunday that Tokyo cannot make any further concessions to Washington on sensitive issues in TPP talks, after a Japan-U.S. meeting ended without progress.
“We had a very tense discussion on outstanding issues, but we reached no conclusion,” Akira Amari told reporters after meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman in Tokyo, suggesting they had focused especially on the issue of how to deal with tariffs on farm products.
The talks came in the lead-up to a ministerial meeting slated for Dec. 7 to 10 in Singapore.
